Used Car Donation : A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Donating a car for charity is a common practice for saving taxes in the United States of America and United Kingdom. Here we will tell you how you can save thousands of dollar on taxes each year. Stay tuned and head on!

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) needs you to calculate your charitable deduction in the following ways :

• The tax deduction depends on the price at which the charitable society is selling your car to the customer.

• If somehow the above point is not obeyed, then the car's market value need to be considered.

Consider the following step by step procedure for a smooth and risk free car donation :

Step #1. Find charities and check their legitimacy.

Google and search nearby charity organizations for car donation. Check whether they are not for profit organization (under 501(c)3 charities) from IRS website https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/exempt-organizations-select-check

Step #2. Give correct information about your vehicle to your selected charity organization.

Provide all the correct and necessary information (e.g., model, VIN, mileage etc.) to the charity organization in written format and do the necessary paperwork.

After all the required formalities they will set a date for picking up your car.

Step #3. Find out the selling price of your car.

You need to find out the price at which your car was sold by the charity. However, if the car is kept by the charity itself and thus it will not be sold then you can claim you tax deduction based on its fair market value.

Step #4. Claim your tax deduction.

Report the amount to the IRS. Remember that you need to complete Section A of Form 8283 if you are claiming more than $500 but less than $5,000 and Section B of Form 8283 if you are claiming more than $5,000. You will also need to include your appraisal unless the car was sold.

Note : When donating a car to charity, make sure that the charity is legitimate by ensuring that at least 75 percent of the revenue from the car go to actual charity funding.
